Thank a Vet on Veteran's Day

10 11 12 - 10:12 Hurricane Sandy 2012: Since 1937 The Tomb Guards have never left their posts.

Veteran's Day is the one day a year that Goverment, business, & common folk gather to honor the brave men & women that have sacrificed much to serve our country. This year Veteran's Day is 10NOV12.

This year, the best way that Americans can thank a vet is to urge Congress to move past the patriotic campaign rhetoric & actually do the things they promised our vets. Now that many vets are now home, we need to show them the same level of support that they gave us. For example:

...Congress must, must pass the Veterans Jobs Corps Act, S. 3457 that went down in flames, 58-40, when the Senate Republicans chose to block it earlier this year, preventing it from reaching the 60 votes necessary to get around the filibuster and thus passed. The Republicans said the bill's price tag was too costly.

We need to get a better grip on the myriad of charities that operate to "help our vets", but actually operate with very little oversight. Some of the biggest charities have been accused of squandering millions that should have gone to actually doing good work. (ei; Charity Accused of Squadering Millions ) These charities should have to report out to the Veteran's Administration, so somebody is tracking where these donated dollars are really going.

Although much has been done over the past few years, we need to further upgrade the VA hospitals to completely eliminate the complaints of poor conditions & substandard care that still plagues the VA. This has been in the news before, but is not in the public eye right now.

Vietman Vets that are now battling health issues need to review the Agent Orange Health Guide, which lists all of the diseases for which the Gov. has admitted that Agent Orange is the "presumptive cause". Any Veteran with one or more of these diseases and has served "boots on ground" during the Vietnam War is automatically entitled to compensation. (Agent Orange Health Guide: ) The DAV has advocates ready to help you!

Thanks for serving, we owe you all!
